What is Hydrocephalus?

Hydrocephalus comes from the Greek words hydro meaning water and cephalus meaning head. Hydrocephalus is an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)–– within cavities in the brain called ventricles. Cerebrospinal fluid is produced in the ventricles and in the choroid plexus and circulates through the ventricular system in the brain, and is absorbed into the bloodstream. This fluid is in constant circulation and has many functions, including to surround the brain and spinal cord and act as a protective cushion against injury. It contains nutrients and proteins necessary for the nourishment and normal function of the brain, and carries waste products away from surrounding tissues.

Hydrocephalus occurs when there is an imbalance between the amount of CSF that is produced and the rate at which it is absorbed. As the CSF builds up, it causes the ventricles to enlarge and the pressure inside the head to increase.

What is Spina Bifida?

Spina bifida is when a baby’s spine and spinal cord don’t develop properly in the womb, causing a gap in the spine.

Spina bifida is a type of neural tube defect. The neural tube is the structure that eventually develops into the baby’s brain and spinal cord.

The neural tube starts to form in early pregnancy and closes about four weeks after conception.

In spina bifida, part of the neural tube doesn’t develop or close properly, leading to defects in the spinal cord and bones of the spine (vertebrae).

It’s not known what causes spina bifida, but a lack of folic acid before and in the early stages of pregnancy is a significant risk factor.
